Hobbies, Interests & Community Involvement:
I once saw a quote that read: “I never know what to say when people ask me what my hobbies are. I mean, I’m a Mom. I enjoy trips to the bathroom alone and silence.” How true! I don’t have much downtime, but that’s ok – I love being with my toddler. I also love hiking, camping, trips to the beach, a good book, and musicals. Pre-mom, I played tennis, the piano, and danced — but I don’t perform any of those talents well enough to give up my day job!

I served on the board of the Wake County Community Foundation for 2 years. I’m also a past president and founding member of the North Carolina chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association. I enjoy emceeing dozens of community events every year, including walks, races, concerts, panel discussions, even political debates. I also like visiting schools to read to kids, answer their questions about the news industry, and tell them why I love being a television journalist.

Family:
Husband Mike and daughter Elsa

Favorite Books:
I’m obsessed with memoirs– few things are more compelling than a person’s story told through its most authentic voice. My favorites: “Angela’s Ashes” by Frank McCourt; “The Liars Club” by Mary Karr; “Growing Up” by Russell Baker; “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls; “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom; and “The Opposite of Fate” by Amy Tan. Other top picks: “Longitudes and Attitudes” by Thomas Friedman; “Memoirs of a Geisha” by Arthur Golden; “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini; and “The Good Earth” by Pearl S. Buck.

Likes Best About North Carolina:
Friendly people and the mild winter (when you compare it to the bitter cold and snow of the Midwest!)

Most Memorable Assignments:
Covering the McCain campaign in Phoenix on Election Day 2008; reporting live from the EQ explosion in Apex for 14 hours straight for WRAL, CBS Early Show and CNN; taking a ride in an F-15E Strike Eagle at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base– without getting sick!; weathering hurricanes and covering tornado aftermath – the events are heartbreaking but the resilience afterward always restores my faith in the human spirit.
