Pete Byrne brings his unique perspective and a passion for sports to viewers every night, as WSBT 22’s sports director.
Two decades of sport journalism experience has taken Pete to the Super Bowl, World Series, playoffs in all four major sports, the PGA Tour, the Frozen Four, the Final Four, and the college football national championship. However, the best part of covering sports for WSBT 22 is being home and following the teams he really loves.
Pete grew up in South Bend and went to high school at Trinity where he played basketball, baseball and just a little soccer. “I was the goalie,” he admits.
He graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in Film, Television and Theater in 1999. While at ND, he was the equipment manager for the football and hockey programs, spending thousands of hours behind the scenes. He is a member of the Notre Dame monogram club.
Pete has won several awards working at WSBT 22, including for his coverage of Notre Dame football. He was recognized for the best sports report in Indiana two years in a row, in 2014 and 2015, by the Associated Press. He’s the 2018 recipient of the Forrest “Woody” Miller Award, given by the South Bend Community School Corporation for excellence in high school media.
Pete returned to Michiana and WSBT 22 in 2006, after spending seven years covering sports in Minnesota and North Dakota.
Pete is thrilled to be back home, covering his beloved Fighting Irish, along with all his other favorite local teams including the Cubs, Bears, and Blackhawks. He’s also happy to be back covering some of the best high school sports around, including Hoosier Hysteria – “the best high school basketball in the country if you ask me”.
Don’t be surprised if you find Pete out at a local golf course — talking up a better game than he can play!
When not on the links, he likes to spend free time at the gym and (surprise) watching sports.
Pete and his wife Jen have three kids, Nicki, Jack and Izzy.
