Mary Stackhouse

Mary Stackhouse is a news reporter and weekend anchor for WZDX news and is excited to serve North Alabama through stories and reports.

Mary studied journalism at Boston University, where she earned a Master’s of Science in Broadcast Journalism. While at Boston University, she reported, produced, and anchored for BUTV10, Boston University’s student-run newscast. Mary was also awarded the Natalie Jacobson Internship at WCVB-TV News, an award which honors Jacobson as Boston’s first female evening news broadcast anchor.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Mary traveled to New Hampshire to cover Obama and Palin rallies and produced a series of in-depth election reports. While an intern at WCVB and during the national controversy surrounding the arrest of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Mary was the first to get an on-camera response from Sgt. James Crowley, after President Obama suggested that he, Crowley and Gates should have a beer together at the White House.

Mary also interned at ABC World News with Charles Gibson, where she had the opportunity to work and intern with the show’s producers and former correspondent John Berman. In addition, Mary reported for Neighborhood Network News while in Boston. She was student host to former FOX News anchor Bill O’Reilly, upon his visit to his alma mater, BU, where he spoke to students.

Her broadcast and video story-telling experience includes working as a reporter for WHNT-TV in Huntsville, documentary hosting, producing a series of leadership talks for CourageToLead, and working as the community features host at WIAT-TV in Birmingham, among other projects. In her role at WIAT-TV, she hosted and contributed to the launch of Around Town as well as Restaurants and Recipes, series created for CBS 42’s Wakeup Alabama Weekend morning show. She also hosted segments for the Highlight on Health series, Eco Savings Race, and holiday gift guides for CBS 42 viewers. As Community Features host, Mary hosted a variety of pieces, leading her on a range of adventures that included taking viewers along for a ride on the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Alabama, learning how to play golf and giving viewers an inside look at the PGA Tour Superstore, exploring the best at the Georgia Aquarium, training like a Sheriff’s deputy, touring homes and talking home and design trends with Birmingham Home and Garden Magazine and Summer Classics, and hosting recipe segments with Dreamland BBQ’s talented owner Betsy McAtee, who shared secrets for creating easy recipes with a BBQ twist.

Mary is passionate about storytelling and loves to discover and help share stories that matter and make a difference. She also loves having the opportunity to meet interesting people and learn new things along the way!

Mary also enjoys volunteering in community projects and serving at Church of the Highlands, where she attends. She is passionate about God’s word and growing in her faith and is currently working toward a certificate of ministry in Highlands College‘s evening program. She also enjoys golf, working out, and exploring new restaurants, and traveling.
