Mark Boyle

WRAL anchor/reporter

Professional experience:

2007-2008 WWSB Sarasota (reporter); 2008-2011 WFTV Orlando (Enterprise reporter); 2011-2016 KPRC Houston (reporter); 2016-2019 WCNC Charlotte (investigative reporter and anchor)

Awards & Recognition:

Several Emmy award nominations for our tropical storm and hurricane coverage along the coast including Irma. My photographer and I spent time in Charleston and braced several feet of standing water and helped some flooded residents find dry land.

News Philosophy:

I believe in true journalism. Getting it right, getting it first, all very important aspects of the business, but getting it accurate is more important than anything else. Our viewers expect and demand we provide accurate and truthful journalism. That’s what I plan to do here at WRAL.

Education:

I graduated with a bachelors of science degree from the telecommunications department at the University of Florida. Go Gators!

Birthplace:

I am a fourth-generation Floridian. Born and raised in St. Petersburg. My parents and two brothers are still there. I’m the only one who ventured out 🙂

Hobbies, interests, community involvement:

My hobbies consist of trying to stay in shape whether it’s the gym, walking around some of the beautiful parks in the Raleigh area or running long distances. The most recent long run I completed successfully is the New York City Marathon.

Family:

My grandmother, mom and dad and two brothers live in St. Petersburg Florida. It’s awesome to have them there because they live at a vacation destinations. I can always find an excuse to go home and see the family!

Like best about North Carolina:

I love the distinct four seasons of North Carolina. Coming from Florida it was just hot, hot, hot. Here there is a distinct mix where you can get snow and ice one month and then the next month it will warm up quickly and the next month it will be rainy. The unpredictability keeps you on your feet. All eyes should be on the WRAL meteorologists’ forecasts for tropical systems even though we aren’t on the coast.

Most memorable assignments:

My most memorable story assignment comes from my days in Orlando at WFTV. When I arrived in Orlando, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department was still searching for Caylee Anthony. Eventually police arrested her mother, Casey. Fast forward three years, a jury did not convict the little girl’s mother in her death. Casey walked away a free woman. It was a fascinating story to watch unfold on TV, and being in that market give it a whole other vantage point from my view.

Another story that really pulled at my heartstrings was the coverage of the death of Reverend Billy Graham. I was sent to Washington, DC, to cover the events happening at the nation’s capital. That was an opportunity I will never forget.
