Mobile native Byron Day has returned to FOX 10 News after a career covering major stories around the world. Byron anchors FOX10 News at 5 and 10 p.m., while contributing stories to the newscasts.
Byron’s career started in Mobile as a staff announcer/weathercaster for a local tv station while he was still attending the University of South Alabama. After graduation, he moved to Memphis and WHBQ TV, continuing his work in weather for one of the top stations in the country. He was also the station’s initial host of PM Magazine, a 30-minute program highlighting fun, informative features from around the Memphis area and the country.
His next stop was NBC Sports in New York, where he worked as anchor/reporter, covering many of the biggest events for the top sports network. Some of those memorable events: Wimbledon, ’82, where he was the first to broadcast from the historic “Standing Room Only” area at Centre Court during matches; “The 1981 Freeze Bowl” AFC Championship Game between Cincinnati and San Diego where the wind chill during the game was minus-37 degrees. He also covered Super Bowl 17, Major League Baseball Playoffs and World Series, and served as Anchor/Host of NBC’s award-winning Baseball Pre-Game Show. During this time, Byron was nominated for a Sports Emmy.
Following NBC Sports, Byron went on to become the first main anchor for two major cable sports networks “Sports Time” in Cincinnati, and “SCORE” in Los Angeles. He also provided play-by-play of MLB games, the World Baseball Championship from Italy, as well as hosting various “live” interview programs featuring sports personalities and players, fielding phone calls from fans across the country.
Byron then transitioned from sports to news, returning to Mobile and WALA TV, as morning anchor and reporter. After returning to Memphis as main anchor of WHBQ, he moved to Raleigh, NC as main anchor of the NBC owned and operated station there. During this time, Byron covered the Bosnian War, as well as the Somalian Civil War and UN Intervention. He also traveled to China to help facilitate an exhibition of Chinese tomb treasures in the US, reported from presidential campaigns and anchored coverage of several hurricanes during this time, while being recognized for his efforts.
Desiring to spend more time with his two children, Byron became an award-winning financial services representative and manager in the Raleigh area, representing national companies, while serving his broad client base.
Byron is thrilled to be back in his hometown, providing FOX10 viewers with the news and information they need to know.
“There aren’t many opportunities in broadcast journalism to return to your roots, “ according to Day. “Other stations had reached out to me over the years, but the timing or location just wasn’t a “fit”, especially while my kids were younger.”
“With the children grown and on their own, this was the perfect time to come home and work with an outstanding group of broadcast news professionals, in a place I love. It’s such a blessing coming ‘full circle’,” he said.
In his free time, Byron enjoys traveling, visiting Gulf beaches, attending college football and baseball games, and working out so he can keep up with his two grandchildren!
