BOB WERNER

Bob was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended college at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, receiving a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He is a registered professional engineer.

In 1978, Bob auditioned for a part-time job as weathercaster at WNDU-TV. He was hired as backup to legendary local weathercaster Dick Addis. Bob worked at WNDU-TV for seventeen years before moving to WSBT 22 News in 1995.

His rigorous training in math and science has led to Bob’s recognition by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) as a meteorologist and full Member of the Society. In fact, he says the highlights of his weather career are earning the AMS Seal of Approval in 1988, and the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation, the highest distinction given to a broadcast meteorologist, in 2010.

The most memorable story he covered in his career was the great blizzard of January, 1978, just a few days after his first TV audition. He says the toughest parts of his job are dealing with the time pressure of live television, and forecasting problems presented by Michiana’s “lake-affected” weather. Bob advises people wanting to get into broadcasting to study hard, be realistic about your talent, and be prepared to live on slim wages, especially at the start.

Outside of work, Bob enjoys spending time with his family: wife Kathy, daughters Meg and Emily, and grandsons Ethan and Oliver. He also enjoys reading, astronomy, long-distance running, softball, and golf.
